Do Good Plaza

University of Maryland

Transforming a campus entrance into an interactive call to action for social change.

Overview

The University of Maryland’s Do Good Institute needed to be more than just an office—it needed to be a movement. As the first stop for 20,000 yearly visitors, the challenge was to turn a physical plaza into an emotional recruitment tool. We designed a series of immersive installations that don't just tell students about the university's mission to "do good"—they make them feel it. The resulting plaza serves as a beacon, inviting prospective students to see themselves as future changemakers.

The Details

The experience anchors on The Rings, a sensor-driven sculpture that greets visitors with dynamic light and audio stories from alumni. This momentum carries indoors, where we replaced static plaques with life-size touchscreens. Here, prospective students stand "face-to-face" with their peers to hear directly about their social impact projects, blending physical scale with digital intimacy to ground the university's abstract mission in tangible, human narratives.

“Doing good for society has become a part of the Terrapin spirit. Terps are ready to be the next generation of leaders for social impact and change.” He calls the rings an "entryway" to UMD's vision, inspiring visitors to see themselves as part of a community that is committed to making a difference.
